Getting to Kisumu:

There are daily flights to Kisumu from Nairobi. Kenya Airways, Jambojet, and Fly540 ply this route. You can also drive to Kisumu or take a bus as we did. We used Easy Coach and it was okay. Modern Coast, Guardian, and Prestige Shuttle are popular options.

Getting around Kisumu:

Travelling around is quite affordable. There is an abundance of tuk-tuks, boda bodas(motorcycles), matatus, and taxis available.

Where to stay in Kisumu

Accommodation choices are plenty and they vary with budget and location. My top picks are the Imperial Hotel, Imperial Hotel Express (perfect for budget and business travellers), Acacia Premier, Sovereign Hotel, Ciala Resort, The Vic Hotel, the Grand Royal Swiss Hotel and Best Western Kisumu Hotel. Alternatively, you can stay at these beautiful Airbnbs.

Places to go/ Things to do in Kisumu:

Visit the Kisumu museum

The entrance fee is Kshs.100 for a resident adult.

Get a quick lesson in history in the archaeology section, learn about reptiles in the snake park and reptile area( there were two crocodiles and tortoises), fish in the aquarium, and Luo culture in the traditional village set-up.

Indulge in Luo culture by visiting the homestead(at the museum) and dancing with The African Genre Shield  (which is a group that keeps Luo culture alive through performances and teaching about aspects of Luo culture.) They are doing amazing work rebuilding and maintaining that part of the museum. Check out some of the work they do here.

Catch some views of Lake Victoria

Pass by Hippo Point which is a few minutes away from the CBD. There’s not much to see it’s actually just a view of the lake literally but if you are a sucker for views like myself it is a must-visit. For a better view, you can go to Kiboko Bay Resort. However, the water hyacinth on the shores is killing the lake and the views. Something needs to be done.

Go to Kit Mikayi

Learn some history about this religious site as well as Luo culture and traditions. Climb the huge rocks and savour the epic views at the top. The rocks are huge and slippery but the views will quickly ease your worries. After the climb, have a good stretch by dancing with a group of ladies from the local community.

Transport to Kit Mikayi was Kshs.100 via matatu, Kshs.50 via motorbike from the main road to the site and the entry fee was Kshs.150.

Enjoy sundowners at Acacia Premier Hotel

Have some drinks with friends as you take in the glorious Kisumu sunsets.

Visit the Impala Sanctuary

See a variety of wildlife and walk among the free-ranging zebras and impalas. Or get to pet Alice the cheetah.

The entry fee is Kshs.250

More things to do in Kisumu:

  • Go on a boat ride on Lake Victoria
  • Visit Ndere Island National Park for breathtaking views of Kisumu City and Lake Victoria. View wildlife and camp on the Island. The entry fee is Kshs.350 for adults and Kshs.200 for children
  • Eat scrumptious fish and ugali at Lwang’ ni Beach.
  • Enjoy nature at Dunga Board Walk- entry fees is Kshs.100 for adult citizens. Have a picnic, enjoy the lush marshland and visit the museum.
  • Hike to the top of Abindu Caves.
  • Visit the Equator Point and conduct the Coriolis Effect experiment (water appears to move clockwise to the North and anti-clockwise to the South).

The highlights of my trip were holding animals and all the dancing. For a chance to do the same and more, pay the lakeside city a visit.

Those are some of the things to do in Kisumu.
