Getting to Kizingo Eco Lodge

The best way to reach this secluded paradise is by taking a flight to Lamu. Multiple airlines, including Skyward, Safarilink, and Jambo Jet, offer daily flights from Nairobi. I used Skyward, and it was a convenient experience.

Once you arrive in Lamu, your adventure truly begins, as the primary mode of transport on the island is by boat. The journey to Kizingo by speedboat was bumpy but riding past the lush Mangrove channels was a welcome distraction.

First Impressions

Your journey begins with your first step onto Kizingo Eco Lodge’s pristine shores. Here, a simple philosophy reigns: “No shoes, no news.” The entire area, cloaked in soft sands, invites you to kick off your shoes and revel in the pure pleasure of being grounded. Upon your arrival, you’ll be greeted by the jovial Kizingo Team ready to receive you.

The first thing you will see is the artsy Kasuku Bar and Restaurant.

Surprisingly, the coastal location is not as humid as expected, making it an ideal destination year-round.

Kizingo offers eight unique bandas, each thoughtfully designed to harmonize with the natural elements surrounding them. The Makuti bandas are scattered across the property, surrounded by lush trees and vibrant flora. Every room is spacious and features a lounge area and a rooftop deck that offers breathtaking ocean views.

I stayed at the Mangrove Banda, surrounded by mangrove plants, with a green theme that blends seamlessly with the surroundings.

They even provide thoughtful touches like various teas, crackers, and tamarind juice, to snack on all served on clay and recycled glass crockery.

One unique feature of the Lodge is the outdoor showers, allowing you to connect with the island’s natural beauty.

Kizingo Eco Lodge

Kizingo Eco Lodge offers unspoiled views of the beach, serene sunrises, magical sunsets, and moon risings.

On dark nights, you can even witness the enchanting bioluminescence of the ocean, created by phytoplankton in the water.

Commitment to Sustainability

Kizingo Eco Lodge is a trailblazer in eco-conscious hospitality. The property operates with minimal environmental impact, utilizing solar power, reusable items, locally produced products and paperless systems. Guests are offered a mobile phone and a JBL speaker made from 100% recycled materials. This phone serves as a personal hotspot, and concierge tool, making communication with the staff and ordering room service a breeze.

From crafting their mosquito repellent to making ketchup and jams, Kizingo is all about self-sufficiency.

The Lodge’s commitment to sustainability extends to the construction and operation of the Lodge, with an impressive 99% of building materials sourced locally. Kizingo also supports the local community through its foundation, Jua Mwezi, which funds various initiatives, including building classrooms and supporting local healthcare in Kipungani Village.

Meals at Kizingo

Kizingo’s menu is primarily vegetarian and pescatarian, with two vegetarian meals and one seafood or fish dish for either lunch or dinner. I was quite sceptical about the menu knowing that there would be no meat options but you will be happy to know that I did not miss having meat. All meals were delicious and I doubt that I will ever stop raving about the Onion jam! The Chef has mastered the art of using locally available ingredients to create delicious meals with a Swahili touch.

The airy restaurant is a fantastic place to enjoy scrumptious meals while gazing at the breathtaking ocean view. They also welcome day visitors for lunch.

Things to do at Kizingo Eco Lodge

The Lodge’s beachfront location means that many activities revolve around the water. They organize plenty of activities to help you discover Lamu, get a thrill or unwind including:

  • Sunset dhow cruise
  • Motorbike safari to Lake Kenyatta
  • Sunset dunes nature hike
  • Snorkelling trip to Kinyika
  • Surfing and Paddle Boarding
  • Skimboarding
  • Mangrove Tube Drifting
  • Kayaking through mangrove channels
  • Catamaran sailing
  • Lamu town tour
  • Weaving classes

Next door, you can indulge in thrilling kite surfing, organized through the Lodge.

The activities offered have a very low impact on the environment, which again is a testament to Kizingo’s ethos.

During my stay, we went on a lovely sundowner at the nearby dunes and I also tried my hand at kayaking. The former was a beautiful experience till the rains decided to kill the vibe and the latter was scary for me (you might recall that yours truly cannot swim) but I got the hang of it pretty quickly.

Unfortunately, I was unable to go on a dhow cruise or kayak at the mangrove channels due to the rains and high tides. While the weather on Lamu Island can be unpredictable, this only adds to the adventure. Sudden rain showers give way to clear skies, making for a dynamic and ever-changing atmosphere. Such weather fluctuations are a testament to the effects of global warming, but they also serve as a reminder of the fragility and beauty of our natural world.

One of my favourite spots to chill at was the Paradise Lounge/Library. They have an impressive collection of books by African writers as well as card and board games. They can also organise a movie night, which I thought was an incredible idea given the magical location.
